About
About this Blog
This blog is intended not only to give some insight into my thoughts and working methods, but also to show the starts and fits of growing and pushing oneself further as an artist. It is very much a warts-and-all type of blog. Now, I could of course post only the finest pieces and show you only the most refined and finished work that I do, but 1) I’m from the Midwest, and something about that strikes a part of me as “dishonest” even though I suppose it’s really just good marketing, and 2) where’s the fun in that? If you wanted to see brilliant finished artwork I could recommend many fine museums at which you’d be able to see dozens if not hundreds of works finer than mine, and many friendly helpful people there to teach you more. That’s not what this blog is about. It’s about process. I hope that’s why you came. Enjoy!
Bio
Kurt Ankeny grew up wanting to draw comic books and trained for it, developing intensive drawing skills along the way. As he moved toward making a living at his art, the fine arts and illustration became a stronger draw, and he moved quickly to develop his abilities in oil painting and classical aesthetics. Beginning in 2004, he trained in classical drawing and painting techniques at the Washington Studio School and the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington DC, and continued his studies under Natasha Mokina at Winter Palace Studios in Bethesda, Maryland. In early 2007, he moved to Massachusetts to apprentice with Roberts Howard, a former illustrator and founder of the Art Forum on AOL who now runs the Cennini Forum and Studio Products, a line of top-quality handmade artist’s materials. There he worked on many projects and assisted in teaching some of the most intense artist’s workshops offered today.
Since March of 2008, Kurt Ankeny has been working independently out of his studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts. His work is in many private collections and he has shown at Cove Gallery, The Art Room and Flatrocks Gallery in Gloucester.
